Memory Greenhouse

2016 / Taichung (Project proposed while working at CMP Pujen Foundation for Arts and Culture)

“I once heard someone say: when you can no longer have something, all you can do is not forget.”
— Ashes of Time, Wong Kar-Wai

If one day I forget something important, perhaps it means it no longer is.
But if one day a forgotten memory suddenly returns, I will gently dry it in the sun,
add some salt and a hint of fennel, and preserve it.

Scent is a key to deep memory.
It might be the fragrance of a girl’s hair, a man’s cologne,
or the humid air of a high school classroom in summer.
These smells awaken emotions tied to specific moments.

Choose a scent from your memory.
Give it an expiration date.
You may open it and remember, or seal it and keep it.
Keep it for yourself, or gift it to the one who lives in that memory.
